Not for the beginner!

This is not really a book for those who are looking to learn the basic history of the Second Reich, basically Germany from 1866 to 1918. It contains a series of interesting scholarly essays, all of which require at least a working knowledge of the history of the period and the historiographic issues related to its study. With sufficient background, there is much to be learned from these essays.

Caginess aside, even if your avatar is a cartoon, post at least one up-to-date photo; otherwise, people presume morbid obesity or flapping linguine hair.

Better than first edition

This is the wittiest, funniest, savviest collection of observations on how to be an effective male in the twentieth first century you can find. Don't confuse this vast smorgasbord of essays on everything from wine, dating, music choice, sex, in-laws, kink, and clothes with the kind of pseudo-cool yet actually uptight advice you'd find in GQ or similar post-frat boy rags. Practical and highly amusing at the same time.

Every man should own this book

I reference this book as much as the bible. It has become my second bible. I take it everywhere I go right in my napsack, in my car and whenever boarding a plane. Imagine all of the witty advice columns you've read in Playboy, Maxim, GQ, Mens Health, etc. and you have the MG series in one tidy and handsome package. Read it, soak it in and live like a gentleman. And if nothing else it is an excellent conversation starter.

If you are a man or know a man this book is a must. I originally bought the first edition in high school back in early 2000, and i was impressed so much that i decided to apply a lot of what i learned. this book really helped me out, especially when i was in college trying to balance my social life with work and school. among a few things i learned that i often get kudos for in my adult life that i can credit the book with are basic skills for mixing drinks, hosting gatherings, and grooming standards.

A heartbreaking and informative memoir/self-help...

I have been watching Maria Antonieta Collins on Spanish television for a long time now--first as an anchorwoman for Univision and now as the presenter on Cada Dia, a popular morning variety show on Telemundo. She seems like a very nice person, all smiles and joviality in front of the camera. But no one knew what was hiding behind her smiles and perkiness. As her career skyrocketed, her personal life got worse and worse. She finally revealed everything during a very emotional interview with Maria Celeste Arraras on Telemundo. (Collins, who considers Arraras her friend, reported that she was "hurt" and "dismayed" with some of MC's questions. As a fellow journalist, she should understand that Arraras had to put friendship aside and ask the hard-hitting questions.) She talked about her husband's battle with cancer, and how she'd been his rock and strength throughout his illness. But that was the least of it. She revealed that her husband had been unfaithful and committed bigamy. He was married to a woman in Colombia while he was married to her! In Dijistes Que Me Querías: Como Sobrellevar lo Impensable (You Told Me You Loved Me: How to Survive the Unthinkable), she writes in detail the entire thing she had to go through after she found out, and about her decision to stay with him after he discovered he had cancer. This is one of the most heartbreaking memoirs I have read, but it ends with a hopeful tone. Collins gives advice on what to do after you discover your spouse has been cheating and how to pick up signs of deceit. This is a self-help book as well as a memoir, and it pulls at the heartstrings. I have nothing but respect for this Emmy-award winning journalist, and I wish her the very best. She deserves it.

María Antonieta es excelente persona y escritora. La felicito por este libro que realmente es un ejemplo de fortaleza y enseñanzas.
Lo único negativo es que el libro tiene muchas faltas ortográficas o de acentuación y la impresión no es de buena calidad, hay palabras que no pueden leerse.
Por lo demás, recomiendo este libro, sin dudas.

La verdad no esperaba aprender mucho de este libro cuando me lo regalo una amistad. Pero, una vez que comenze a leerlo no pude parar hasta llegar al final. Parece sacado de una telenovela, pero es la realidad. Admito que aprendi muchisimo de el, porque cada tragedia incluye lecciones de como sobrevivirlas.
Encontre varias faltas de cuidado en la edicion, que aunque no quita de la calidad del libro, si se ve feo.

About the Author
IRVING STONE was born in San Francisco on July 14, 1903. He wrote several books in a genre that he coined the “biographical novel,” which recounted the lives of well-known historical figures. In these novels, Stone interspersed biography with fictional narrative on the psychology and private lives of his subjects. He also wrote biographies of Clarence Darrow and Earl Warren, and short biographies of men who lost presidential elections. He died on August 26, 1989.

Let the reader beware - this is more novel than letters

I, like the many reviewers of this book, was enthralled and inspired by this collection of letters when I first read it 25 years ago. I have recommended it to many friends. At the time I would have given it five stars or even more if they were available. Irving Stone writes in his preface "My aim has been to edit the 1670 pages of material down to a swiftly flowing, continuous normal-sized book..." He succeeded but even 25 years ago I was a little disturbed by the complete absence of indications where exactly Mr. Stone had done his cutting, or his editing. Today, in the age of internet we can now do some easy checking. The unabridged letters are on the net and reveal that basically what this Dear Theo is, is another novel written by Irving Stone. There is almost no resemblance to the original letters. The novelist has used his talents and the raw material to create a beautiful saga. Worth reading, but let the reader beware.

Essential reading for lovers of art...

"Dear Theo" should be mandatory reading for all students of fine art today, as no modern artist injected a level of passion into their work equal to that of Van Gogh in 1880 through 1890. This volume is a sort of highlight reel of Vincent's comments on his life and art to his beloved brother Theo. I recommend "The Complete Van Gogh" published by Taschen to accompany "Dear Theo", as there are no visual examples of Vincent's art aside from the cover included in this book. No one who appreciates fine art will be sorry to invest in either publication.

Poor quality of paper and printing!

The paper quality of this book is very poor, and affected the prints in half of the book- making the prints blurred and hard to read! So much so that I thought I was having problems with my eye, and asked others with good eyesight to check the book! They also confirmed that it was the paper and prints!!

Fiercely independent (read the chapter entitled "Judging Books by Their Covers"), intolerant of stupidity even when it comes packaged as high intellectualism (check out "Is Electricity Fire?"), unafraid to offend (see "You Just Ask Them?"), Feynman informs by entertaining. It's possible to enjoy Surely You're Joking, Mr. Feynman simply as a bunch of hilarious yarns with the smart-alecky author as know-it-all hero. At some point, however, attentive readers realize that underneath all the merriment simmers a running commentary on what constitutes authentic knowledge: learning by understanding, not by rote; refusal to give up on seemingly insoluble problems; and total disrespect for fancy ideas that have no grounding in the real world. A late relative of mine, a world-renowned physicist, once said: "One has to be an open palm. As soon as it clenches into a fist, the person looses the ability to learn and to enjoy new things. And that is the onset of old age".
Looking at our parents and grandparents, older colleagues, and now increasingly often at my own contemporaries and at myself, I am beginning to understand what a hard task it is - to remain an open palm.
Almost no one avoids the nostalgic illusion - in our better days snow was whiter and girls prettier, and what we've been taught is the only correct doctrine. One only sees how ridiculous such claims are when confronted with a different, higher breed of people, who remain curious and young at heart at any age. Richard Feynman was one of such people.
In case someone does not know, Richard Feynman was a physicist, a Nobel prize winner, a participant of the Manhattan project, the founder of quantum mechanics. I have no idea what it is; they say, though, that a new race of computers will shortly change our world and our perception of it; these computers will be supposedly built on principles foreseen by Feynman.
Feynman's book, subtitled "Adventures of a Curious Character", is his memoir - not written down, but narrated in conversations with a close friend. It is very clear that nothing surpassed his ardent passion for physics. When Feynman spoke about his subject, he rejected all notions of etiquette and subordination; Nils Bohr and Einstein could discuss their new ideas only with him - other colleagues just gaped in awe at any dictum of theirs. Feynman writes about the very *process* of discovery - this is probably the only sincere and authentic description of scientific creativity of such scale in literature. In the closing chapter, Feynman speaks about the scientist's responsibility - not to society or colleagues, but rather to himself and his science; all his recollections, serious and jocular, clearly demonstrate how serious it was to him.
They say a gifted person is gifted in anything. Feynman was unusually eager to prove this dubious statement. He came to Brazil to lecture on physics, and ended up playing frigideira and winning, with his fellow musicians, the annual competition at a street parade in Rio. He recorded a percussion-only soundtrack for a ballet, and the performance won a second place at a prestigious competition in Paris. He tackled pencils and brushes without any knowledge or experience in paining, and soon became a hot commodity on the art market. In "alien" domains Feynman always acted incognito or under an alias - he never wanted to be the proverbial Dr. Johnson's dog, whose ability to walk on its hind legs was judged by the fact that it was a dog, not because it walked well.
Feynman's free-time undertakings were usually perfected to a degree which would be the crowning glory of many a professional career. He spent one of his summer holidays working under James Watson, the discoverer of the DNA, and soon was able to read a sound lecture about his own findings to Harvard professors of biology. All this seems improbable; but Feynman never admires himself too much, his boasting is good-natured, and he laughs at himself at least as much as at others.
He was a master of that, of course. Almost half the book is devoted to his practical jokes. During his work in top-secret labs of Los Alamos, he developed a taste for cracking safes; the pinnacle of his burglar's career was the simultaneous cracking of three safes containing *all* US nuclear secrets.
A womaniser without narcissism, a braggart without pomp, a jester without malice, a unique, but amiable character - Feynman is the most loveable memoir writer that could ever be. He never took anything for granted - having read an article about the bloodhounds' phenomenal olfactory abilities, he set to investigate humans and found out that ours are not much worse, just underused. He hated pompous fools; the description of an "interdisciplinary" conference, where the narrator's common sense and logic fail in a combat with "intellectuals", is a real tragic comedy. He was open to any new experience (unless it threatened to damage the thinking mechanism - which explains his abstinence from alcohol and drugs of any sort). Since his childhood, when he fixed radios by thought, to his old age, he remained an open palm.
An excellent lesson for any of us.

Unique moments from the life of a unique man.

It is not often that you see a Nobel-winner physicist behaving the way Feynman did, with such humour mixed with an obviously enormous amount of knowledge. Feynman was no ordinary physicist and no ordinary citizen, a rebel who could not be forced to behave like many around him.
This is probably the first Feynman book you should read, and it is indeed a book that anyone interested in science with a touch of good humour MUST read. While I am definitely not a fan of those "just read it" reviews, if you are still questioning if Feynman's thoughts are worth your money, I have to say "think no more, and go for it"
I strongly suggest getting "What do you care what other people think"? in the same amazon order so you can read it right after. It is a book which basically shares the same type of structure, but includes more thoughts on Feynman's youth, and a more emotional story about his first wife Arlene. Both titles are full of wisdom and fun. A good 3 rd title is "Most of the good stuff". It might be useful to mention that these titles often appear to have no chronological order, and the new Feynman reader might be left somewhat confused about when and why the events where happening. That is why you should also get the excellent biography of Feynman, "Genius", by James Gleick, which will definitely solve that problem.
For those who are worried about any massive amount of math and physics, fear not. That is obviously part of Feynman's work, but it is not essential for the books I mentioned. (But it is true that knowledge of the 2 subjects will probably make some thoughts more understandable. When it comes to math I often know what Feynman is talking about, as I had several years of nasty math classes in college, but when he is lost in his world of high physics, I am often left scratching my head...)

A wonderful collection of Feynman's zany adventures!

This book is a jewel. One would be hard pressed to find a more comical and enjoyable book to read - anywhere. Feynman is the scientist who breaks (or should I say, shatters?) the stereotype of the lab-coat physicist who wears thick, taped up glasses. The great Richard P. Feynman is a testament to how great we as a race can me. I like to think of him as a cross between Goethe & Robin Williams (and I do NOT mean that in any sort of deragatory way). As a physicist, he was top notch, but as a person he was something even more. He had a marvelous sense of humor & enjoyed playing pranks on people. His love of life spilled over to all the people he met during his sojourn on the planet. I only wish that I had been one of those lucky few to have met & known him personally. Perhaps what is most remarkable about him is that he had friends from all walks of life. Many were scientists, yes, but many more were "ordinary" people off the street. That is rather noteworthy given the fact that so many Ivy league-calibre professors feel that they too "intellectually gifted" to associate with the rest of we mere mortals. Someone once said that Edwin Hubble wasn't a humble man, but then again, Hubble didn't have very much to be humble about. I would argue that one could say the latter of Feynman as well, but not the former. READ THIS BOOK and share the experiences of one of the most extraordinary and yet fun loving personages of the 20th century (if not all time). I guarantee it will make you laugh like few other books you will ever read.

Some say he is the first ever to successfully bench "all of it", others may say he is the patriarch of the church of iron, i.e. Pope trenaddict. All I know his that he is the brofessor, and he will be the first ever illiterate best selling author.

Nostalgic and Hilarious

This book is full of nostalgic jokes and the humorous tone of "the Dom" of BroScienceLife. This book goes in depth into the unique brain of Dom Mazzetti. His marginal vocabulary and vast gym "knowledge" makes you feel like you are reading a book written by a bodybuilder who also dropped out of Jr High, which makes this book all the funnier. I personally have watched every video from the BroScience collection and very much appreciate Dom's unique personality and tone which is very well represented in this book. I only wish this book came in hard-cover.

good arrangements but...

I was excited to find piano arrangemens of my favorite disney songs but what the arranger did was that he incorporated famous classical pieces into the arangements almost to where its like a mash-up. Because of this I wasn't really able to get into the songs cause i thought it was weird playing Can You Feel the Love Tonight and then hearing Mcdowell's To A Wild Rose in the same song.

Very nice arrangements of the music of Disney. Especially because I am making professional arrangements of music myself. Phillip Keveren is a great arranger.

These songs are beautifully arranged and not too difficult to play. I would think that anyone who love to play the piano and loves Disney music will love playing them.

About the Author
Louise Crawford is Associate Dean, Research and Senior Lecturer of Accounting at the School of Business, University of Dundee. After working as a post-doctoral research scientist at St Andrews University, Louise trained with KPMG to become a Chartered Accountant with The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland, practicing predominantly in corporate audit. Iain Gray acquired extensive practical auditing experience with PricewaterhouseCoopers in Germany and Italy. He was for many years Principal Lecturer and Head of Auditing at Sheffield Hallam University and is formerly Chair of the Auditing Special Interest Group of the British Accounting and Finance Association. Stuart Manson is a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland. He is presently a Professor of Accounting in Essex Business School at the University of Essex where he lectures on auditing and financial reporting. He has written a number of articles in academic journals and co-authored a number of research monographs in the areas of auditing and financial reporting.
