Purchased the acting edition of Red Velvet Cake War to determine if it was a show I would want to direct for our local community theater. The script is hilarious with real Texas characters and themes. You don't have to work hard to make this play a great comedy...it is all there in the script.

A Southern family reunion where everything goes hilariously wrong!

In this riotously funny Southern-fried comedy, the three Verdeen cousins Gaynelle, Peaches and Jimmie Wyvette could not have picked a worse time to throw their family reunion. Their outrageous antics have delighted local gossips in the small town of Sweetgum (just down the road from Fayro) and the eyes of Texas are upon them, as their self-righteous Aunt LaMerle is quick to point out. Having accidentally crashed her minivan through the bedroom wall of her husband's girlfriend's doublewide, Gaynelle is one frazzled nerve away from a spectacular meltdown. Peaches, a saucy firebrand and the number one mortuarial cosmetologist in the tri-county area, is struggling to decide if it's time to have her long-absent trucker husband declared dead. And Jimmie Wyvette, the rough-around-the-edges store manager of Whatley's Western Wear, is resorting to extreme measures to outmaneuver a priss-pot neighbor for the affections of Sweetgum's newest widower. But the cousins can't back out of the reunion now. It's on and Gaynelle's hosting it; Peaches and Jimmie Wyvette have decided its success is the perfect way to prove Gaynelle's sanity to a skeptical court-appointed psychologist. Unfortunately, they face an uphill battle as a parade of wildly eccentric Verdeens gathers on the hottest day of July, smack-dab in the middle of Texas tornado season. Things spin hilariously out of control when a neighbor's pet devours everything edible, a one-eyed suitor shows up to declare his love and a jaw-dropping high-stakes wager is made on who bakes the best red velvet cake. As this fast-paced romp barrels toward its uproarious climax, you'll wish your own family reunions were this much fun!

Excellent little southern comedy! It really is a laugh-a-minute script. The premise is, the three Verdeen cousins of Sweetgum, TX are trying to hold their heads high during a rather embarrassing family scandal. To keep up appearances, they go ahead with the Verdeen family reunion, and a ridiculous wager is made on who can make the best red velvet cake. Roles for 3 men and 7 women (doubling). Hilarious cast of eccentric southern characters. Am certain this would be a real crowd pleaser.

About the Author
Jens Müller was born in Koblenz, Germany in 1982 and studied graphic design in Düsseldorf. Recipient of numerous national and international design awards, Müller is Creative Director of optik design studio in Düsseldorf, and editor of the A5 book series on graphic design history. He teaches graphic design history and editorial design as a visiting lecturer at the Peter Behrens School of Arts, University of Applied Sciences Düsseldorf.

R. Roger Remington is Vignelli Distinguished Professor of Design at the Vignelli Center for Design Studies, Rochester Institute of Technology, New York. He has lectured and written extensively on the history of graphic design, including Nine Pioneers in American Graphic Design and Design and Science: The Life and Work of Will Burtin and has been reocgnized by the RIT Eisenhart Award for Outstanding Teaching and the Trustees Lifetime Achievement Award for Scholarship in Graphic Design.

Dirt cheap for how amazing this book is...

This book is absolutely incredible. There are older books out there I've wanted that cost $150+ that cover modernistic logos - but so glad I found this book. For $60 this book is a no brainer for any logo designer. Thousands and thousands of fantastic timeless forms for inspiration.

This book is huge, both in terms of volume of content and volume of the book itself. It's a serious tome! Would probably cause serious bodily harm if dropped on your foot. Contains a fantastic survery of mid-century logos from the dead simple to the bizarre. Great inspiration material, and excellent alternative to dumbbells for curls and similar exercises.

Good introduction, heavy on the pretty pictures

This little book is packed full of astute information on the construction of the medieval cathedrals. The primary focus lies on the actual construction and the lives of the people who built them, all written by an elite scholar on the topic. The book is brilliantly illustrated with pictures from manuscripts and modern photographs of cathedrals, all of them relevant. As an introductory work, this book is exceptionally. It is bright, brilliant and written by someone knowledgeable in the field. It is very easy to read.

What detracts from this book is that it is too short, covers too many topics and just too little is present. At only 175 pages, many loaded in pictures and including the index, there just isn't a whole lot of content to be had. At times, it feels like it was designed as a tourists handbook, rather than an introductory work in the field. The addition of primary texts at the back is a nice touch, but this book had so much potential.

Great, brief read, but unfortunately it won't last through the afternoon. The pictures are nice, and the prices are generally decent. If you want a pretty introduction, read this. It may lack depth, but it is easy, accessible and cheap.

About the Author
In just four years, Melinda Coss took cold process soap making from a hobby in her kitchen to large industrial premises where her team made superb natural soaps and toiletries for well known UK stores, as well as supplying exclusive hotels in the UK and in France. She has also helped set up soap making units in rural Tanzania and in South Africa, and has written two internationally published books on soap making: The Handmade Soap Book and Gourmet Soaps Made Easy, both published by New Holland. She now runs soap making courses in London and France.

Meh... Incorrect recipes abound. There are better books out there.

While the book itself is lovely, there are some errors and it's just not possible to make the soaps, creams, etc like the pictures show with the given directions. Colors aren't even in the same rhelm and even an experienced soapmaker (which I am) would be hard pressed to get the results in the pictures as described as I believe they're heavily photoshopped. This is not to say they can't be achieved, but these details are left out for the new soapmaker. When I got this book several years ago, I adored it as I was just beginning in soap making, however I had many problems with getting well emulsified creams, lotions, etc with her given ewax amounts. I also had soaps that were way too cleansing. For example, in one cream recipe she writes for 32 gm of butters/oils total and only 4 gm ewax and 2gm cetyl alcohol. This is definitely not enough ewax and was the reason my creams never stayed emulsified for any length of time with her recipes. The amount of emulsifier should almost always be 25% of your oils portion. Now I know the soap recipes are meh, but they do 'sound' lovely. If you love the idea of using extreme specialty oils for personal use (these would be way to expensive to ever make into sellable items), this might be nice, however many of the recipes have oils like 'watermelon', baobab, etc that are very spendy and not easy to come by for an authentic version. She does give alternatives in some recipes, but you're left feeling like you're missing out if you aren't using the original stated. As far as scenting any of these products, you will not get any scent in your soap at her recommended ratios. While many of the blends are lovely, her amounts are minuscule and don't come through the cold process at all, especially any that contain citrus which isn't mentioned at all. Citrus in general is wasted in cold process unless you use 10x or 5x orange, lemon, or litsea cubeba.

This is a great book. I have Ms Cross's other two books, but this is the best. There is something in it for every soap maker. I have made two of the recipes and I am eager to try the Green Clay and Oatmeal; to compare her Dead Sea Mud bar with mine, etc. If you are experienced in soap making I highly recommend this book.

Beautiful pictures. Nice recipes, I have tried a few. There are a few recipes with ingredients that I don't think you can get in the United States. But I enjoy learning about the different soap recipes anyway.

A decent review of the current state of affairs but overly reliant on the glottalic approach in its review of PIE phonemics, which is by no means secure at this point in the general literature. Fortunately, the book side steps the entire "issue" by using the mostly current common traditional notion in all discussions. Schematic and useful as far as it goes. Perhaps my biggest problem with this book is that the citational references are non-existent throughout the text. For instance, all of the last two centuries of Germanic philology related to the sequencing of Grimm and Verner are handled in three or so paragraphs and overturned in two and a half sentences--with no citational context. As a result, one is forced to the bibliography. And a cursory overview of the bibliography reveals a thin set of scholarly references. There is an inordinate reliance upon fellow Leiden University authors and scant reference to the broader linguistic community. I read in English and bounded by this limitation. Nonetheless, the broader community certainly exists and density of reference is a point that any scholar should be interested in evaluating related to use of this book.

Wishbone Textbook!

This is a must-read for people who "wish" to "bone" up on how to install
and run the most productive offensive weapon ever devised in College Football
history. Many diagrams of all of the major optioning plays are included,
plus, it has coaching tips with diagrams for all offensive team players
involved.

Credit for origination of the Wishbone was covered in Acknowledgements
Page iv, this book. The Wishbone was born in the mind of Emory Ballard
and utilized initially by Darryl Royal of Texas. These men also shared
their knowledge of the Wishbone to other college programs such as Alabama,
Oklahoma, UCLA, and Air Force, the last team to utilize this system.

For some reason, the formation was discontinued by Texas, Oklahoma, Alabama,
and UCLA after a defensive genius devised a "solution" defense to the Wishbone;
(leaving the Air Force program to retain the triple-option Wishbone T attack).

For those who have not studied the "BackBone" defense, there is a book authored
by its inventor Phil Jack Dawson: "Defeating Triple-Option Offenses With The
Backbone Defense". All details needed for defending the Wishbone are included.
(Too bad, I enjoyed watching this powerhouse offense in operation gobble yardage
in the 70's and early eighties, and hoped it would never end!!).

Other books discussing the Wishbone offense include "Blood Sweat and Chalk"
by Tim Layden, of Sports Illustrated, in chapter 4; and "Wishbone-Oklahoma
Football 1959-1984 (Not all of that time included playing the "Wishbone",
this formation begins discussion in Chapter 9 "The Magificent 'Bone
October 1970".

In sum, this book tells exactly how to install and run the Wishbone T offense.
An excellent resource, to use in case renewed interest in the use of the system
is generated. I highly recommend this book.

The Best Option Football book ever assembled. I have read this book several times a week for many years now. Every time I read it there is another piece of wisdom that I come across. This, and Glenn Tiger Ellisons book on the Run and Shoot are the two greatest football books of all-time.

Make sure you understand which edition is which!

...For some unfortunate reason, the reviews for the EXCELLENT 2001 edition by Smart and Altorfer are lumped together on the same Amazon page as the reviews for the MUCH WORSE 1992 version (by Smart alone). The two books are TOTALLY different, so make sure you know what edition the reviewer is talking about!...
I stress this because I bought the 1992 version years ago, was so
annoyed by it, and was SO much happier with the 2001 edition... A few of the improvements in the 2001 edition:
(1) The old version had lots of readings about things like the oil trade and Islamic festivals. Interesting in principle, but the problem is, they make you learn words like "crude oil", "delegation", and "fasting" before you have even a basic vocabulary (they haven't given you the words for "foot", "eyeglasses", "throw", "kitchen", etc). These are words you will want to know someday to read a newspaper etc., but they're useless at an intro stage (and hard to memorize because of their comparative abstractness).
The vocabulary choices in the new version seem so much more reasonable, and the readings start off with things like "Sinbad the sailor", which are fun and encourage learning actually useful words like "sea" and "gate".
(2) The descriptions of some of the sounds is still basically wrong in some respects, but it now provides several new useful hints (for example that the letter Haa represents the sound people make when blowing on their glasses to clean them).
(3) In the old version, the pronunciation of a word was often not clear. Sometimes the short-vowel signs were missing or fuzzy (or some random blotch ended up looking like a vowel sign). The alif-maqsuura and yaa were not consistently distinguished (contrary to the author's claim). But in the 2001 edition, romanized transcriptions are provided for all the vocabulary. (Lack of transcriptions is a complaint that many of the reviewers raise, but remember, it only applies to the old edition!!)
(4) The old version had a Arabic-to-English glossary but infuriatingly lacked an English-to-Arabic glossary. The new edition repairs this glaring defect.
(5) The 2001 edition adds an index, albeit a very short one (1 page).
The only serious complaint I can make about the 2001 edition is that it seems to be make with the same binding method as the old edition, which fell apart in no time.

Excellent beginner's book

I've looked at about a dozen beginning Arabic books so far, and this is one of the best I've seen for the complete novice. The introductory Arabic book by Youssif Haddad and Jack Ingle has a much more detailed treatment of the grammar and structure of the language, but you need more familiarity with written Arabic to benefit from it. I enjoy learning the formal grammar more than most people so although I think Ingle's book is a better book on the actual language, since I'm a rank beginner in Arabic I bought this one instead, and will supplement it with the Ingle book.
I also thought the Hippocrene book was good, and it would be my second choice for a [beginner.] About half-way through the book it started including many full paragraphs of material for translation. I have my doubts that the beginning reader would be that advanced by that time but I don't really know. I have the Hippocrene Spanish Grammar and it is the clearest, most concise, and overall best basic grammar I have, out of the four five that I own. One other main strength to this book is that it can accompany the tapes so you can get some idea of the spoken language too.
One thing I was pleased to see was that, although I had heard that Arabic was a difficult language, it is actually much simpler than Latin or Greek or even a contemporary Slavic language like Russian, as far as the grammar is concerned. It only has three cases, the nominative, accusative, and jussive, compared to Greek's eight, Latin and Russian's six (and the vocative case in Latin is hardly ever used), and German's four. The nouns are marked for the single, dual, and plural, which is different from English, which lost the dual inflection like many Indo-European languages many centuries ago. But the books make it clear that in modern spoken Arabic the three noun declensions are pretty much universally ignored, and you don't really learn them. The only time you need to know them is if you're reading classical literature or the Koran, or in academic discourse, where it might be used.
However, one difficult thing is that Arabic has many different ways of marking the plural, and here it resembles the complex rules in English for the use of the apostrophe, which causes almost as many problems for native speakers as for foreigners.
That having been said, verb conjugations in Arabic are not difficult and are quite regular, unlike Latin and many other languages. Here Arabic resembles Japanese, which also has a very regular verbal system, and you can count the number of irregular verbs in Japanese literally on the fingers of one hand, and also Chinese, which has no conjugation for gender, number, or anything else. In fact Arabic's is so regular that Arabic dictionaries can refer to the verbs by a number system (I-X). So it appears that the main difficulty in Arabic is learning the alphabet, which is more complex than in English since the individual letters alter their form depending on whether they're at the beginning or end of a word, or in the middle. Another similarity between Arabic and Japanese, oddly enough, is that they both lack a true future tense.
Overall, a good first grammar on a language that may not be as difficult to learn as I was first thinking. However, I'm about to find out!

Excellent conversational Arabic and a Reader Too

There are several negative reviews of this book which refer to an earlier edition. The 2003 edition is excellent. It does have English Transliteration to aid with pronunciation but tries to wean you from it quickly by giving you small sections of Arabic text without transliteration. These are great for learning to read and often they are also dialogues covered on the CD's. The book doesn't stop with learning to read signs and newspapers but is a full-fledged primary reader with excerpts from literature.

Make sure you get the CD set with the book. I had to return my first copy (actually fortunate, since that was the earlier edition) when I found the references to a CD that I did not have. There are many exercises which are intended for use with the CD's. There is a key to the exercises in the back.

I don't know how this book would be for a self-study if I didn't have cause to use the language daily. But, I find the conversational phrases are realistic and useful in my regular interaction with native Arabic speakers. Of course, it is a big advantage being partially immersed, but my progress was nonetheless slow and haphazard until I got this book. I had made no serious prior attempts to learn the script, I'm now reading excerpts from the Qur'an, after less than one month of work. I have used a number of learning resources and this is by far the best I have found for all-around knowledge of Arabic. I recommend a dictionary, however, as the glossary is tiny.
