Well-Researched, Practical Primer on How to Eat in order to Support Good Gut Health!

This book is for you if any of these are true!
- You're looking for a basic lesson in how our guts and the billions of good microbes that reside there work
- You are curious and have heard about the benefits of probiotics but haven't tried them yet
- You're constantly on the go with family commitments, but still want to feed your family in a healthy way that supports good "gut health"
- You have specific gastrointestinal issues and are looking for a long-term solution which focuses on restoring your gut flora (rather than a "quick fix" solution)

The book begins with a very accessible explanation of gut health and the human microbiome (the sum total of the microbial community in and around our body), aka the "gut flora". The author is a scientist but the information is understandable by anyone. Probiotics, prebiotics and the working of the human gut are all explained.

As a scientist, the author is careful not to make any claims beyond what is currently scientifically known. Admittedly, modern science is in the early stages of understanding how this newly discovered "organ" operates within the context of our body.

As a mom, she has made the advice, technique and recipes family- and budget-friendly.

The book provides common sense dietary guidelines on how to work with, restore, and feed your gut flora. She lays a foundation of how to change your habits in order to be most successful, with tips such as "go shopping once a week" and "shop the perimeter" of the supermarket. I think the phased approach for people suffering from ailments is wisely prescribed. The recipes are simple and made from ingredients found at any supermarket. I especially loved the section devoted entirely to fermenting your own foods at home.

The dietary disagreements I have with the author are minor. She advocates unfermented soy products like tofu, eschews saturated animal fats from pastured ruminants, and doesn't address the proper preparation of seeds and grains (soaking, sprouting or fermenting prior to cooking).

These few nitpicks certainly don't take away from the plan's overall usefulness. In fact, the author acknowledges that no two people are exactly the same, and nor should their diets be. She encourages substitutions based on allergies or other preferences.

The WFM cookbook is a wonderful addition to any kitchen bookshelf!

Tastes Great So Far

Unlike some.of the other reviwers, my current diet isn't far off from Campbell's recommendations. I purchased this book because after reading the Sonnenburgs' Good Gut (which this author also recommends if you want more of the science behind her suggestions), I was hungry (wink) for more recipes that focused on veggies, fiber, and fermentation.

Overall, I am very excited to try many of the recipes in this book. The breakfast section goes well beyond steel cut oats and occaional eggs (my usual), adding a few porridge grains that I have yet to try. There are a large number of fish and shellfish recipes, as the author builds off of a Mediterranean diet.

I cannot wait to try out some home fermentation; the directions seem clear, but are a divided between the kitchen tools and tips section and the recipe directions, making me glad I went back and read the rest of the book before trying to make the kefir.

My only big complaint is that there are fewer recipes featuring legumes than I had hoped. I am only doing phase 2, and when it comes to a protein source with lots of fiber and no TMAO, beans are hard to beat. Had the Quinoa and Roasted Vegetable Bowl for dinner, and it was perfect.

A wonderfully diverse selection of healthy recipes with whole foods

Kristina offers full disclosure regarding the state of scientific research about the microbiome - she doesn't attempt to present her phases as cure-alls or substitutions for other therapies, which is refreshing. The information is well laid out and easy to read and comprehend, making it a great introduction to the subject of the health of one's gut.

You'll find seemingly benign vegetables and fruit on the 'avoid' lists, and I found myself VERY interested in what makes these foods less desirable than others. I think I would find it very difficult to follow a regimen if I don't know exactly WHY I shouldn't eat something that seems totally harmless, but I am stubborn and my curiosity demands to be satisfied, so perhaps this is only a minor personal qualm.

I've never even heard of chickpea miso nor did I know it was possible to make miso from chickpeas. I look forward to discovering this food in real-time. The recipes are great and the meal plans offer a LOT of diversity.

One of my issues is with her frequent use of olive to cook with - it is my understanding that olive oil is less stable in cooking and can become rancid quickly. The comment about limiting saturated fat also surprised me because I was under the impression that sat fats were in the clear after the whole "war on butter" was brought into plain view. There was mention of avoiding trans fats but I would have liked more emphasis on this.

I would have appreciate a small section on the importance of soaking beans, legumes and grains. While it does require extra preparation time and effort, I find it well worth it as it offers the dried goods an opportunity to soften and become more digestible.

All in all, this is a great recipe book that offers some information about gut health but lacks details about why specific foods are recommended and others are meant to be avoided (in Phase 1). I will definitely be using some of these recipes at home!

One of Halter's finest

On a night in August of 1938, police constable Edward Watkins is walking his beat when he comes across some strange sights. It seems that somebody is walking around the streets of London in the garb of a seventeenth-century plague doctor. Soon afterwards, Watkins has a conversation with an odd character calling himself Doctor Marcus, a doctor of crime. Suspicious, the officer is convinced that the doctor has hidden a body inside a nearby trash can--a suspicion that Doctor Marcus confirms! Watkins looks into them and finds they are all empty, much to Marcus' apparent surprise. So the mad doctor skips off, but as a parting shot he tells the officer to look into the trash cans once again just in case. When Watkins does this, he discovers to his horror that there's a dead body inside after all.

But how did it get there? And where did Doctor Marcus disappear to? All this seems like it is nonsense, but a few months later, Dr. Alan Twist and Inspector Archibald Hurst are visited by a man named Peter Moore, secretary to Sir Gordon Miller, a prolific author of mystery plays. According to Moore, Sir Gordon received a visitor in his study and the two men had a verbal duel of sorts, which ended in a murder challenge. The two men toss a coin, and the result will determine which man will commit a murder. That man must try and pin the blame on the other, and under no circumstances are the two players allowed to refer to the "game". Unfortunately, Moore could not see what the coin landed on...

Before long, Peter Moore is found dead, shot during an attempted burglary inside the home of his own employer! Dr. Twist and Inspector Hurst hurry to the scene of the crime, and they attempt to solve this complex mystery. Hurst instantly comes up with six hypotheses, but Dr. Twist isn't entirely convinced, and postulates that there must be a seventh hypothesis to explain everything.

The Seventh Hypothesis is quite possibly Paul Halter's masterpiece. There is so much meat to this story and you're never quite certain what on earth is going on until the end, even if, by some chance, you tumble to the secret behind a trick or two before the end. There are at least two impossibilities in this novel. The first has an excellent and simple solution. The second is a bit more complex and harder to guess, but I liked the solution to the first one a little more. Just as much fun as the impossibilities are the verbal duels, which seem like they were inspired by the verbal duels in Sleuth, with revelation after revelation further complicating the plot despite there being only two principal actors.

The most notable achievement is that Paul Halter effectively gives you a mystery with only two suspects and challenges you to guess which one has committed the crimes. You have a 50:50 chance, right? And yet Halter manages to calculate just how your brain will work. Hmm... you say to yourself. It seems impossible for X to have done it, so he's got an elaborate alibi that will get busted wide open, but if that's the case it means Y must have done it to frame X, but if that's the case, it must be an elaborate double-bluff designed to get you to think Y has done it when it was really X, but if that's the case... I made my official guess near the start of the novel, but must have changed it a good five or six times before I got to the end. This is quite simply a diabolically ingenious detective story, a masterpiece of plotting at its finest! In fact, I wouldn't hesitate to call this one of the best detective stories I've read all year long.

To write this review, I read both versions of the novel. My French edition is found in an omnibus released by Le Masque, and I bought the English translation in Kindle form. I can highly recommend both of these editions. John Pugmire has done an excellent job of getting to the heart of Halter's writing style. I can't define it in technical terms, but I performed the only litmus test I can offer: I read one chapter of the book in French, read the next in English, then switched back into French. All three chapters felt like they were part of the same book: an accomplishment for which John Pugmire must be lauded. He finds that sense of play: Halter challenges his readers to solve the crime and then leads them on a merry chase down several garden paths simultaneously.

Overall, The Seventh Hypothesis comes highly recommended for fans of complex Golden-Age-style plots. This is one of Halter's best efforts and one of Dr. Twist's most complex cases. It ends on a wholly satisfactory note, and the solution is diabolically ingenious. The writing is most agreeable, with a sense that the whole thing is a challenge to the reader: a challenge Halter won hands-down. This is plotting at its finest, and is not to be missed under any circumstances!

Could've been better

Although I'm most definitely a Paul Halter fan, I found THE SEVENTH HYPOTHESIS somewhat disappointing. I gave it three stars because the author's usual inventiveness and solid plotting ability are fully in evidence. As I pointed out in my review of his THE LORD OF MISRULE, characterization is not one of his strengths. But in other works of his, characterizations, however sketchy they might be, are attempted. I can't say the same for this novel. I thought everyone sounded alike, and it was often difficult to remember who certain people were, requiring me to page back to identify them.

That said, I nevertheless hope John Pugmire will continue to bring us translations of Halter's work.

Truly an impossible-crime mystery

Inspector Hurst of Scotland Yard and Dr. Twist, the brilliant criminologist, spend hours in this book concocting hypotheses, demolishing them, reconstructing them, and brooding over them. The seventh hypothesis is the one they haven't thought of yet.

There's a theatrical murder, an attack that might have been meant for murder, and an accident that could have been murder. There are two suspects whose motives can only be wildly surmised. Both are stereotypes (clever egotistical writer, vain self-satisfied actor). Suspicion shifts at a dizzying rate between one and the other.

I normally enjoy Paul Halter's mysteries, but this one was too unbelievable for me, the plot too convoluted, the happenings too preposterous. I also couldn't keep the characters straight until deep into the book.

I would suggest reading The Demon of Dartmoor and/or The Fourth Door rather than this one.

The Wishing Tree by William Faulkner was my daughter's favorite book when she was younger. Was happy that I found it on this site to give it to her this Christmas (she will be 40 years old this coming August!) She was very excited!

A children's book by William Faulkner (!?)

Faulkner has always been interested in the perspective of children. The Sound and the Fury and several of his short stories ("That Evening Sun", "Uncle Willy", and "That Will be Fine" come to mind) have delved into the psyche of children as they observe the adult world. However, this curious book, written in 1927 for his future step-daughter, is written expressly for a child. As would be expected, Faulkner's foray into children's literature is a marked departure from tradional books for children. In this book, a sort of cross between Alice in Wonderland and the Wizard of Oz, the reader meets not only the child protagonist and her childhood friends, but an ageing Confederate veteran, a Black nanny and her disreputable husband. Not only do the children pursue the elusive wishing tree, but get to witness marital strife and the delusional ranting from an old man. I doubt seriously if this book, replete with sexual and racial stereotypes, would ever find its way into a present day children's reading room.
To be fair to Faulkner, this was written with no idea for publication, as a present to an eight year old girl on her birthday. Regardless of its literary merit, it has come to the light of day as well as to the mention of critics, and through them, has taken on a more serious aspect, something the author could never have forecast while writing it.

Unforgettable

I read this book when I was 8 (more than 20 years ago) and I've never forgotten it. It was to me a fascinating story, a fable, really. And when I look at it today, I can see how philosophical it is. Still today I remember how I should get out of bed on my birthday!

About the Author
Henry M. Sayre is Distinguished Professor of Art History at Oregon State University-Cascades Campus in Bend, Oregon. He earned his Ph.D. in American Literature from the University of Washington. He is producer and creator of the 10-part television series, A World of Art: Works in Progress, aired on PBS in the fall of 1997; and author of seven books, including A World of Art, T he Visual Text of William Carlos Williams, The Object of Performance: The American Avante-Garde since 1970; and an art history book for children, Cave Paintings to Picasso.

I choose this rating because the book is good. What I like about the book is that it tells the stories and captures the voices that have shaped and influenced human thinking and creativity. What I dislike about the book is that it had a lot of pages to read. I would recommend this book to other people.

Amazing collection

Not since I was introduced to Wislawa Szymborska's writing have I found a collection of poetry that I not only wanted to read over and over and over again, but to memorize every word so that I could recite the poems to myself whenever I wished. Mary Karr's newest collection, SINNERS WELCOME, is a beautiful meditation on revelation in a world gone mad with abundance and self-interest. Karr seeks and finds the divine in the grittiest of objects and places - factory restrooms, a coat hangar, ashes sent to her in a plastic bag labeled "Mother, 1/2". Karr's poetry is a reminder that the sacred is everywhere, only hidden from view until we draw it out with our longing.

Concurrent shame and redemption is a recurring theme in this collection. The poet often writes of reaching out to the sacred just as she shrinks back from it, as in "Disgraceland":

"I found myself upright
in the instant, with a garden
inside my own ribs aflourish. There, the arbor leafs.
The vines push out plump grapes.
You are loved, someone said. Take that
and eat it."

Or, in one of my favorites - "For a Dying Tomcat Who's Relinquished His Fomer Hissing and Predatory Nature", in which the poet cradles her dying cat and finds an analogy between herself and the cat, and God and herself:

"It hurts to eat. So you surrender in the way
I pray for: Lord, before my own death,
let me learn from this animal's deep release
into my arms. Let me cease to fear
the embrace that seeks to still me."

The waxing and waning of human relationships is another theme: the collection includes two beautiful requiems for deceased friends:"Metaphysique du mal", and "Elegy for a Rain Salesman", as well as a few poems on the theme of her son's birth, childhood, and departure for college. Whether she is talking of delinquents or dying cats, serial-killing football players or her alcoholic mother, Karr writes with a rare grace that will astonish the reader with its truth and beauty.

Her final essay "Facing Altars" is a beautiful explanation of and companion to her poetry. The essay is ostensibly about how she became a believer after being a confirmed agnostic for forty years by approaching prayer through poetry, and finding similarities between them: "With both prayer and poetry, we use elegance to exalt, but we also beg and grieve and tremble." She also outlines the next step in her literary project: to bring more joy to the poetry that she writes, and prove the maxim "Happiness writes white" wrong.

This collection suffers by two points. The first, I lay solely on the publisher: the jacket blurb, which opens "Mary Karr describes herself as a black-belt sinner . . ." and continues with "Not since St. Augustine wrote 'Give me chastity Lord - but not yet!' has anyone brought such smart assed hilarity to a conversion story." The "Catholic Girls Gone Wild" label that this blurb gives the book is misleading. First of all, if Karr is indeed a "black belt sinner", no evidence towards this label is presented in this collection. No sins she discusses reach anywhere past blue belt, unless you're the Jerry Fallwell type. Second of all, while some of the poems are funny, the collection is far too good to be demeaned by the label "smart-ass", which is something you would call a funny kid who talked back or a bawdy comedian. Janeane Garofalo is smart-ass. Mary Karr is not. It really irks me how much the publishing industry has sexed up their jacket blurbs to make things seem "hip" and "edgy". They usually end up just misleading and degrading the work they describe. They should stop.

The second point by which this collection suffers isn't in the poems themselves, either, but in the final essay, "Facing Altars: Poetry and Prayer". The essay does a good job of explaining how an 'undiluted agnostic' could convert to Catholicism. It is personal and empathetic, and I really enjoyed it. My only problem with it is in the opening paragraph: "To confess my unlikely Catholicism in Poetry -- the journal that first published some of the godless twentieth-century disillusionaries of J. Alfred Prufrock and his pals -- feels like an act of perversion kinkier than any dildo-wielding dominatrix could manage on HBO's 'Real Sex Extra.'

While publishing an essay on Karr's conversion through poetry in the same journal that T.S. Eliot published "Prufrock", the same poem that brought Karr to poetry, is fitting, or ironic, or something, it is not kinky in any definition of of the word kinky, and the "dildo-wielding dominatrix" line is so out of place in the context of her poetry and the rest of the essay, that it really threw me off of Karr's message in her final essay. If I didn't know that the essay had been published in _Poetry_ magazine before being published here, I would have thought that that opening paragraph was thrown in to justify the "smart-ass" description on the jacket blurb, and anyway had the effect of again, trying to sex up something that could have stood on its own merits.

She sees the light!

I picked up this book at a bookstore, because I remembered a couple of her poems I saw in the New Yorker, one was "The Choice" and the other was "Blessing from My Sixteen Year Son". Both I knew were wonderful poems, so I bought it. I've probably read this amazing book from cover to cover about 3-4 times already, and I've worked my way backwards, picking up all her earlier work. I've always been a huge Larkin fan and it's good to see the voice of angst again, but this time, unlike Larkin, there is hope for Karr, whereas Larkin dwelled in a world of desolation having never loved someone. This book is highly recommended, one of the few gems in contemporary poetry.

Bumping Into Spiritual Meaning

Mary Karr is an amazing poet, an amazing thinker who is able to distill her responses to the world as she finds it and opens a few windows into the world as she wants or thinks it should be. We need Mary Karr and others who write words like these wonderful poems. She reminds us that there is a sense of meaning if we seek it. And while it is a well known fact that Karr's journey from agnosticism to Catholicism is a head-scratcher at best, the poems in this her fourth anthology, are among her finest.

A good example is her poem 'Orders from the Invisible':

'Insert coin. Mind the gap. Do not disturb

hung from the doorknob of a hotel room,

where a man begged to die entwined in my arms.

He once wrote

he'd take the third rail in his teeth, which is how

loving him turned out.

The airport's glass world

glided me gone from him, and the sky I flew into

grew a pearly cataract through which God

lost sight of us. The moving wall

is nearing its end.'

Read it, and then with all of Karr's poems, pause, think, and read it again. This is a major poet with a unique voice that has much to tell us - if we are open to listening. Highly Recommended. Grady Harp, May 06

Good resource for manipulative medicine

I am a 2nd year Osteopathic Med Student and purchaced the book b/c it was was required for the course.

The atlas contains several hundred useful techniques and what makes it nice is it provides step by step instructions for each technique with accompanying pictures that make the instructions easy to understand and memorize for exams.

This book will be a useful resource to remember many techniques throughout my career. I wish they offered it in hardcover b/c I will use it for a long time to come

Got me through my Recertification Boards!

Thought this book was very well presented. The pictures were very clear. I was really able to go back and relearn/review a lot of techniques I was rusty on for my Family Practice Recertification Boards. I did deduct a star because how the book was organized was a bit confusing at times, and so I had to flip all around the place. But the pictures were really well done and the arrow made it very clear HOW the techniques were done. I also really liked that it gave variations on each technique, so that you could find the one that worked best for you or in a specific situation.

This is one of the best resources I've found for OMT refresher. The pictures are sharp and well posed so you can clearly see the setup and activation necessary. An excellent atlas, wish I had had this when I was at KCOM.

About the Author
Andy Steves was born into a traveling family, heading to Europe each year while his father, Rick Steves, updated his guidebooks, made TV shows, and researched new tours. His father’s passion for travel, in-depth cultural experiences, and efficient, affordable travel rubbed off on Andy during these family trips each year once he graduated from the stroller. A semester abroad during his undergrad at the University of Notre Dame opened his eyes to the fascinating world of independent, budget travel and the need for the next generation of travel tips and tricks became painfully clear to him. A Useful and Detailed Travel Guide Not Just for College Kids

I have been a fan of Rick Steves for years, jealously watching his excursions on PBS, wishing I was there myself... which led me to finally begin planning my own trip to Europe a couple of years ago. Rick has nothing short of a plethora of information in his shows, classes, website, and YouTube channel, however, many of his suggestions and preferences just don't fall within my price range or interests. When I heard his son Andy had written a book, I'll be honest and say I wondered if it would be something that was actually useful to me, or if it was more of a thing where he got to write a book simply because of who his father is. I am very happy to say it's the former. Being Gen X and not a Millennial, and because I will only be visiting two of the thirteen cities featured, I also wondered if there would be enough in the book to make it a worthwhile purchase; I truly feel there is. While not everything in Andy's book applies to me (i.e. we don't plan on staying in hostels), so much does (i.e. how to maximize your time in each city within a couple or three days).

I was fortunate enough to meet Andy this summer as well as attend one of his travel classes; he embodies the same friendly and inviting "let me take you along" nature and appreciation for culture that his father has, but with a fresh and perhaps more lively approach. (Side note: for those of you who can travel to Edmonds, WA, I highly suggest visiting the Rick Steves Travel Center and attending some of their FREE travel classes held on Thursdays and Saturdays.) Andy's target market and audience are college students, therefore as a single mother, my financial status is obviously my biggest commonality. His approach to these excursions in Europe is to enjoy as much as possible that falls within your interests and your means. Perhaps that approach is not entirely unique, but most books I've encountered, even Rick's, seem to expect you to have a budget from an income bracket far above my own. Right off the bat, each city featured has a little section in the margin called Calibrate Your Budget, which highlights the "typical" price for a hostel dorm bed, two-course dinner, pint of beer, bicycle rental, and single metro pass. Above that you can find Know Before You Go (Key Stats & Figures) and below that you can find Movies to Watch - I loved the latter because it gives me a way to entertain myself while I count down the days to my departure.

The book is in full color and each city is color coded which is perfect for someone as OCD as me. Each city also has a map, detailing popular/must-see attractions, museums, eateries, hostels, metro/underground stations, etc. Each city also features a three day itinerary, what things to plan ahead for (i.e. which places you'll want/need to have reservations), different passes, events/festivals, day trips, etc. Everything is well organized - there are sections for things like Top Sights, Top Neighborhoods, Top Eats, Transportation, Help, etc. - and the headers/subsections are well marked which makes it easier to find what you're looking for when you need it. Other features include [City Name] 101 which gives you a quick rundown of the city, and Act Like a Local which gives you a bit of insight into certain traditions, foods, etc. Be sure to read through the introduction which not only explains the best way to use the book, but is chock full of useful information; the same goes for the appendix.

All in all, this book is a great resource if your time and/or budget is limited. If you are a Millennial, regardless of your economic status, this book is definitely for you. If you're a bit older, like me, it's a candid look into what to expect in your travels, as well as some genius ways to save some money while abroad. And, if you're a parent taking your child, as I am, it gives you a better perspective of what the younger generation finds of interest so you can fit some of those items into your itinerary. That said, if drinking, hostels, and the "nightlife" aren't your scenes, I would encourage you to consider some of Rick Steves' books (and free classes & info online) as well, however, there is plenty in Andy Steves' book to spark your interest, plan your itinerary, and guide you through these European cities on its own.

B. Macpherson. Drawing on an examination of sermons and tracts of the New England clergy, Dworetz argues that the colonists themselves did not hold this conception of Locke. Moreover, these ministers found an affinity with the principles of Locke’s theistic liberalism and derived a moral justification for revolution from those principles. The connection between Locke and colonial clergy, Dworetz maintains, constitutes a significant, radicalizing force in American revolutionary thought.

Deciphering the American Revolution--and its historiography

A useful summary and critique of the changing paradigms of the historiography of the American Revolution as it shifts ground between the Lockean interpretations and the more recent revisionist accounts based on the issues of civic republicanism
proposed by Pocock in his Machiavellian Moment. Another work similar to this is Diggins' The Lost Soul of American Politics (and also On Hallowed Ground). The view of Locke from the left (entirely useful up to a point) has long created a kind of mental block as to this seminal figure, but it was hard to disown him from his seminal place in the generation of modern liberalism, and it is just as hard to see how Machiavellian republicanism can be taken as a substitute. But then that's the debate, and a review of the different perspectives is well served by this reflective account, among others.
