About the Author

Shahid F. Khalid has over 30 years of experience in software engineering. At Boeing he is presently working on the design and implementation of the Next Generation Automatic Test Equipment using LabWindows/CVI. In the past he has used LabWindows/CVI to test embedded software for the engine control unit on Delta IV rockets, to create applications for laser beam alignment, and to control and diagnose automatic test equipment. He is the author of LabWindows/CVI Programming for Beginners (0-13-016512-3), also published by Pearson PTR.

About the Author
Joseph Beuys (1921–1986), alchemist, social visionary and artist, was born in Germany. In 1961, he became Professor of Monumental Sculpture at the Düsseldorf Academy, but was expelled in 1972. With his first gallery “action” in 1965, Teaching Paintings to a Dead Hare, his international reputation began to grow. In 1979, he was honored with a major retrospective at the Guggenheim Museum, New York City. He died just after receiving the prestigious Lehmbruck Prize and left behind numerous large-scale installations and site works, hundreds of provocative multiples and small objects, thousands of drawings, documented social sculpture forums about energy, new money forms and direct democracy, and above all, a methodology and ideas such as “parallel process” and “social sculpture.”

Volker Harlan was born in 1938 in Dresden, Germany. He studied arts, biology, and theology, and was a priest of the Christian Community until 2001. He is a cofounder of the private University of Witten-Herdecke and a lecturer on the philosophy of nature and aesthetics. His doctorate was published as Das Bild der Pflanze in Wissenschaft und Kunst. He was a friend of Joseph Beuys from 1972 until Beuys’s death in 1986.

Beuys explains his expanded 'definition' of art and materials

Beuys clarifies what he means when he says that everyone is an artist. Fascinating to hear about the meaning behind his use of such substances as honey, copper and felt to name a few, through the conversation unfolding. Materials also mean will, speech and thought. Art means shaping the society in which we live. We also get an impression of his sense of humour.

Great book. I use it almost every day as a music major on euphonium. Started using it junior year in high school. Highly recommended for any high level high school player and a must for any college euphonium player. Only flaw is the book design. The book edge is standard paperback, but should really be spiral bound. Way too many pages to keep the book open. I have to use clips to keep mine on the page

About the Author
Carol Jago has taught English in middle and high school for 32 years, is immediate past president of the National Council of Teachers of English, and serves as an associate director of the California Reading and Literature Project at UCLA. Carol served as AP Literature content advisor for the College Board and has published six books for teachers with Heinemann. She has also published four books on contemporary multicultural authors for NCTE's High School Literature series. Carol has written a weekly education column for the Los Angeles Times, and her essays have appeared in English Journal, Language Arts, NEA Today, as well as in other newspapers across the nation. Great book on teaching writing!

The cover of this book doesn't really draw one to it, but don't let it deceive you. This book was written by an English teacher and not only does she share her philosophy on writing, but she shares numerous ideas on how to get kids to write and write well. One of the ideas she has to help write a persuasive essay, is to have students go through a newspaper and cut out five articles, editorials or whatever, that interest the student. Choose one of the articles as inspiration for your persuasive paper. When writing about literature, she has the students use a reflection chart (included in the book) to help them organize their thoughts for their paper. Another writing assignment involves using scented cotton balls (perfume, disinfectent, or air freshener) to help students write about a setting influenced by that smell. An inspiring and interesting read.

About the Author
Paul Tymann is Professor and Chair of the Computer Science Department at Rochester Institute of Technology. His research interests include bioinformatics, operating systems, networking, parallel computing, and object-oriented programming and design.

G. Michael Schneider is a Professor Emeritus of Mathematics and Computer Science at Macalester College in St. Paul, Minnesota and a Visiting Professor of Computer Science at Columbia University in New York. His interests include parallel processing, computer networks, and computer science education. He has written textbooks on software development, data structures, computer organization, and a breadth-first overview of computer science. Schneider was a member of the committee that authored the ACM/IEEE Computing Curriculum 2001. He has received Fulbright Grants to teach computer science curriculum development in Mauritius, Malaysia, Nepal and Mongolia.

Modern Software Development Usinjg Java by Tymann & Schneider

This is a down-to-earth and classic textbook on software development via Java as the programming language. Some of us may already had Java programming experience in undergraduate classes therefore this book can serve as the Java programming review. On the other hand we can use this book in conjunction with other already excellent textbooks like "Introduction to Programming in Java" by Robert Sedgewich & Kevin Wayne to begin learning Java in undergraduate classes or to brush up our software development and programming experience. The textbook contains lots of useful illustrations and explanations which do help out a lot while we are exploring the Java programming language and apply it in our software development, and therefore I can go ahead and give this textbook or reference book (depending on what we call it) a five star rating. Thank you.

Book for CS 2110 at UVa

My prof at UVa has us reading an online version of this book which is apparently available. I don't like reading from a computer any longer than I have to (irony) so I ordered it. It's cheaper than most textbooks and is definitely helping with the course. Although, pretty much anything in it can be found with a google search. It goes over more of the process of making code than coding itself. If you go to UVa and are a good student and are reading this, you probably don't need this book. If you sleep in class like I do and don't want to have to try to interpret slideshows, you need this book.
