About the Author
Dr. Marilyn Bizar is a Professor and Chair of the Department of Secondary Education at National-Louis University in Chicago. A former public school teacher, Marilyn collaborates with a network of 12 Chicago public schools, the Best Practice Network, seeking to implement authentic and challenging teaching methods in classrooms. Along with a team of full-time teacher-leaders, the network offers classroom consulting, staff development workshops, and leadership development for teachers, principals and parents. In 1995, Marilyn helped found the Best Practice High School, a 450-student Chicago Public School that demonstrates on a daily basis, that classroom methodology can make a difference for kids and teachers. Marilyn has co-authored four books, including Methods That Matter with Harvey Daniels, School Leadership in Times of Urban Reform with Rebecca Barr, and Rethinking High School, co-authored with Harvey Daniels and Steve Zemelman, which chronicles the challenges of creating and implementing a new, small high school in Chicago. Marilyn consults and presents in schools and at conferences around the country. She assists schools in examining their high schools for reform and restructuring. Her workshops focus on developing literacy strategies across the curriculum with teaching methods that are learner-centered.

Harvey "Smokey" Daniels has been a city and suburban classroom teacher and a college professor, and now works as a national consultant and author on literacy education. In language arts, Smokey is known for his pioneering work on student book clubs, as recounted in Literature Circles: Voice and Choice in Book Clubs and Reading Groups, and Minilessons for Literature Circles. This book is a great book to learn about great practices in the classroom. It is not like a normal manual or textbook. It actually is a story, with data, and interviews from all players involved including: parents, students, teachers, school district, etc. It is a great book and I highly recommend it for teacher's that want to better their classroom.

A must-read for high school teachers

We often hear how the elementary schools need to be reformed; very rarely does the reform reach the high school level. Most people think it's too late by then. This book encourages change, and the authors are speaking from experience, not from a textbook. Daniels, et.al., have outlined 11 essentials for running an effective secondary school that focus on students and learning. What a novel idea! They're simple ideas, but their implementation is vital. The book is easy to read, inspirational, and motivating.

While this book was for me an engaging text, it didn't seem to break new ground on what a high school can be. It's a good book though and I'm sure others will like it for its organization and scope.

About the Author
Dr. Jerrold S. Greenberg is a Professor in the Department of Public and Community Health at the University of Maryland. Dr. Greenberg earned his baccalaureate and masters degrees from The City College of New York, and then continued his education at Syracuse University where he earned his doctorate. Among Dr. Greenberg's honors are included: the University of Maryland Service-Learning Advocate of Year Award for 2003-2004; the American School Health Association's Distinguished Service Award; selection as Alliance Scholar by the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance; the Presidential Citation, the Certificate of Appreciation, and the Scholar Award of the American Association for Health Education; selection for inclusion in Who's Who in America, Outstanding Young Men of America, and Who's Who in World Jewry. Dr. Greenberg has also served on the Editorial Boards of the professional journals, Health Education and The Journal of School Health; and as a reviewer for other professional journals. In addition, Dr. Greenberg has conducted stress management workshops for professional, business, and lay organizations throughout the United States.

Excellent Math Starter but need a workbook

This book introduces the 1st Grade Math concepts very well, however you will need a workbook to have your first grader practice the concepts introduced to them.

great for what it is.

our son struggles with math facts, so i thought this would be a great way to help him really *dig in* & get those facts, as opposed to the spiral approach. we used primary mathematics 1a & 1b in 1st grade, but our little non-math-brain child did not get along well with this approach. we switched to saxon math (spiral approach) at the end of these books, & have seen his confidence rebuilt. this would be a great program for a child without our son's math disability.

Concept Heavy, Practice Light, Overly Cutesy

I am comparing this book to my daughter's public school math book (Houghton-Mifflin Expression) and another grade one book we have, from the German Zahlenland program.

This book has less practice than any other book. The average page has about 4 problems. The print and pictures are large. It is entirely in black and white. With word problems, sometimes there are only two problems (with a sub-problem each) to solve.

Conceptually, the book asks a lot of first graders. It asks them to look at a picture, say, with three or four groups off people totaling eight, and to tell a story about these people that can be written as a number sentence that fits the pattern below. Then, below, they will have boxes arranged in a number sentence like:

__ - __ = 5

So the child must determine the total, figure out how to make a story to fit the sentence and the scene depicted, and fill it in. This is much more conceptual than in my daughter's German book, and somewhat more conceptual than her Expressions book.

Based on what I see in my own kids, I do not see this as a good fit for the child who learns by doing. There is not enough doing for such a child to pick up the pattern. On the other hand, I believe that it would be an excellent supplement for such a child to really dig into the concepts behind arithmetic, particularly if the child was in a classical repetition-based program.

For a child who rejects repetition and who likes to examine the "whys" of math, this book would probably be a great fit, albeit a bit easy.

I really think more repetition is necessary to really internalize math facts for the vast majority of children, even very bright children (IQ 125-145). I'm not into rote learning, but I do think there is a point at which you want to stop having the child visualize everything and start having them do more complex computation and this book will not get every child to that point.

Conceptually, it is also different to the other books in an important way. Our German and American workbooks have strong ones and tens focus. Lots of grouping. The German book is one of the highest rated in Germany, a country which maintains high international scores in math in spite of a large immigrant, non-native-speaking population. They still have significant repetition and importantly use tens grouping from the moment you add sums greater than ten. The German book does it differently than the American book but it is there. This book (1a) does not have that.

I know that Singapore consistently does well internationally on tests. But Singapore is a restricted city state with a mere 6 million people. Germany achieves very high results in a much more diverse, dispersed population over ten times as large. I only point this out because I know that Singapore math achieved prominence due to its high scores on international measures. So as someone with books from both countries, I thought I'd share my opinion on how the Singapore book might not be as good, in spite if Singapore's excellent test results.

Sadly the German book we own cannot be recommended as it is not available in English.

Surprising

This an interesting book. With the name "Prospero Burns" I was expecting the massacre of the Thousand Sons from the Space Wolves perspective. That's not what this is about. It's really the Road to Nikaea and how the Enemy can fool a Primarch.

I found it a bit irritating at times, but I'm really impressed how it all pulls together at the end. Bear is a great character, as well as Howser.
The basic idea of the story is very good, and the flaws of Russ are used quite well against him. Even if you struggle, I'd keep at it for the ending.

Best book in the Horus Heresy

I consider most Warhammer fiction simple and straight forward. When you buy a Warhammer novel, you know, most of the time, what you'll get - violence, destruction, killing and explosions. One of the main reasons for why I read Warhammer literature, is not for the novels themselves, but because of the awesome universe they describe. Dark, gritty, unforgiving and usually quite horrible. I love it.

Prospero Burns was, to me, yet another novel set in the Warhammer universe. I had few expectations, other than reading about my favorite legion. I was in for a surprise.

Being used to the simple nature of most Warhammer literature, I was amazed at how daring Mr. Abnett was with this novel. Although there was the required violence and brutality, Mr. Abnett chose to focus this novel on the soul and demeanor of the Vlka Fenryka. Throughout this novel, you are given beautiful insight into the mysteries of the Space Wolves, and I for one, am left with the impression of having read about a sentient pack of wolves, the space faring kind.

Thank you Dan Abnett, for writing something far deeper and more complex than we are usually granted when reading Warhammer.

I got this book for my son who needed to learn VBScript fast for some reason. Within days he already mastered it and work with his co-workers to fix some problem they had at work. I would give this book to anyone that needs to learn VBScript fast and easy. If my son was happy with it then I'm happy with it.

Do not waste your time with this pamphlet, it is riddled with errors and missing information. You'll find more accurate information on Microsoft's website concerning VBScript.

Be cautious if ordering this book for beginners.

Only advance programmers can spot the errors in this book when referring to code. For the beginners, they might be pulling their hair out trying to find out why some of the examples are not working. Be very cautious when ordering this pamphlet of 54 pages. Also, understand that even though the title and cover do not mention it, this vbscript literature is catered when working with HTML. I had to modify examples for vbscripts using a .vbs extension, but still some html examples are flawed.

If you do get this, only get it as an e-book as you should not pay more than $3 for this. The physical books offered are way over priced, especially when you see the amount of errors published. With a little proof reading and corrections, this book can have a value of $7 but no more.

Read Oriah's "The Invitation" (circa 2001) and just recently learned of this sequel... Maybe it came at just the right time in my life, or maybe "The Dance..." is actually even better than "The Invitation," hard to tell.

I HIGHLY recommend this book.

If you accepted Oriah's "invitation," it is time to dance.

It is difficult to imagine, but The Dance is even better than The Invitation. With her unique blend of beautiful language and down-to-earth wisdom, Oriah Mountain Dreamer takes us to the next logical, post-invitation step: action. "Don't just say 'yes' to my invitation," Oriah tells us, ". . . take my hand and dance with me." The Dance is about active spirituality, about putting our dance steps where our mouths are. And as with The Invitation, Oriah Mountain Dreamer leads us along this path by taking her turn at vulnerability first. She leads by example, and she is a beautiful, perfectly imperfect example of what humanity can be. The Dance offers fresh perspectives ("I believe that the big picture is somehow shaped by how we live the details, the little pictures that run through our lives."), and wise counsel ("If you need to be afraid, fear will come wherever you are, but you don't have to go out looking for it."), and it confronts the dangers of oversimplified, sugar-coated self-help recipes. ("Guaranteed outcomes and delineated steps may be warranted and useful for baking cookies and assembling bookshelves, but I find them less useful and potentially misleading when we are talking about finding meaning and creating happiness in our own lives and in the world.") As a psychotherapist, as an author, and as a human being, I have found a kindred, anti-namby-pamby spirit in Oriah Mountain Dreamer. Reading The Invitation is not a prerequisite for reading The Dance, but I can't think of a better way to spend your reading time than to read these two babies back to back. I said that it is difficult to imagine that The Dance is better than The Invitation, but you don't have to rely on imagination. Reading is believing.

One of the best short stories ever written about apartheid and the problems very timely today.
In todays wars the countries and people also are not ready to rule and lack the training and experience.
Gordimer was a wonderful writer and wrote many stories about her native country.
