American writer Faber Birren devoted his life to color and it's effects on human life. After writing around 25 texts on the topic, it would be safe to say his work is considered highly among color experts and psychologists around the world. Birren's work has a strong focus on linking how humans perceive colors to how it makes them react. He writes, "Good smelling colors are pink, lilac, orchid, cool green, aqua blue." Birren explores the work of several physicians, scientists and doctors, mainly the German psychoanalyst and physician Felix Deutsch, whose findings throw important light not only on medical practice with references to color but on the whole psychology of color. Birren states that if a person prefers warmer colors such as hues of red and oranges, they are likely to me more aware of their social environment. He labels these as "warm color dominant subjects." On the other hand, those preferring cooler colous such as blues and greens, are categorized generally as "cold color dominant subjects" and are recognized as finding it challenging to adapt themselves to new environments and situations". By splitting people into separate categories, based on their color preferences, Birren finds himself able to establish a greater understanding of their personalities and characteristics. One experiment Birren explores in his text, courtesy of Kurt Goldstein, involves a subject standing before a black wall with his eyes shut and arms outstretched to touch the wall in front. When the subject is influenced by a warm color such as the color red, his arms deviate away from each other, whereas when under the influence of a cooler colour such as green or blue, even though the reaction is a subtle one, the subject will move his arms closer together. I find this experiment, simple as it is, to be fascinating in highlighting the strong effects colors have on our minds and bodies. As well as distinguishing the differences in peoples' character through his use of color psychology, Birren also touches on the effects colors can have on the mentally ill. This section was the most interesting and involved a series of complex experiments such as discovering which neurological disorders were linked to which colors. Courtesy of the work by Hans Huber, it was proven that patients suffering manic tendencies preferred the color red, a symbol of blood and anger. Hysterical patients were more sensitive to green, "perhaps as an escape", the color linked to paranoid subjects was found to be brown and schizophrenics are sensitive to yellow. Birren states that persons troubled with "nervous (neurotic) and mental (psychotic) disturbances are greatly affected by color and are responsive to it". Therefore color becomes much more significant to them, and affects them in a completely different way than those without such neurological disturbances. Chapter 12 "Neurotics and Psychotics" is the most compelling in the text as it relates to my dissertation topic. After struggling to find texts specific to my research subject, this text and its contents came as a welcomed discovery and I will be referring to Birren's work throughout my further research.

Great info and fascinating historical context

Birren's study of the impact of color on psychology and physiology was groundbreaking in its time, and many of the color applications that are now seem so normal to us --yellow stripes on hazardous materials, muted green walls in institutional buildings, orange/ red /brown decor in fast food restaurants- have their roots in his work. This is not a touchy feely book about how color affects your mood, but a fascinating study of color's effect upon the body itself. It's a highly readable, highly informative classic in the field, and should be in the library of any designer.

About the Author

Jillian Venters was a fairly spooky and morbid child. When she discovered the existence of the whole Gothic sub-culture, she clapped her hands with glee and fell upon it like a babybat upon a box of Count Chocula cereal. Since then, the Lady of the Manners has spent a not inconsiderable amount of time trying to gently persuade others in her chosen subculture that being a polite Goth is much, much more subversive than just wearing T-shirts with "edgy" sayings on them. She lives in Seattle.

A charming guide to alternate aesthetics

Jillian Venters' Gothic Charm School website has for some time been offering advice, hints and tips on etiquette and lifestyle to her fellow Goths and those close to them. Always insightful, witty, and down-to-earth, she treats her correspondents with obvious respect and a healthy dose of affectionate humor.

The same respectful yet witty tone is liberally larded in this, her first volume distilling the essentials of the most common themes and topics in her advice columns. Though primarily aimed at the Dark and Spooky Crowd, most of what she presents here about dealing with a world that looks askance at those who are different will be taken to heart by anyone who is to either side of the mainstream, and her advice on manners is as applicable to snide cheerleaders as it is to gossipy Goths.

Pete Venters' droll, spot-on illustrations (in black and white, of course!) are a perfect accompaniment to the text and worth appreciating in their own right.

All in all, a very fine read, indeed.

Not JUST for the Goth Crowd.

While it may be aimed at Goths and those that love- or just want to understand- them, this book is a true show of why good manners are a good thing for EVERYONE. As a delighted reader of the GCS columns and a "Goth Friendly" person, I appreciate the humor and wonderful common sense (not so common anymore, really) advice Jillian has to offer. This book is a humorous and informative read!

A classic text, but outdated and ill-maintained

When first published in 1988, this was one of the few - if not the only - comprehensive textbook for engineers on separation of biological molecules. It quickly, and deservedly, became the mainstay of senior/graduate bioseparation courses. That was over a decade ago, and as the biotechnology industry has evolved away from antibiotics, solvents and organic acids towards high-value recombinant proteins, the book's content has become progressively outdated. The sections on centrifugation, solvent extraction, adsorption isotherms, and linear breakthrough curves in column adsorption are well done and highly recommended to anyone seeking a brief but solid introduction to these areas. However, both the examples and the content of the chromatography section are disappointingly old-fashioned. Readers seeking information on chromatography would be better off with a recent edition of Scopes' Protein Purification book, or Ladisch's new bioseparation text. Electrokinetic methods are given short shrift, and the exciting applications of bioseparations to genomics, proteomics and drug lead identification are absent, having emerged after the book. Finally, readers should beware the many errors in equations and homework problems, which have stood stubbornly uncorrected through numerous reprintings.

Wonderful for any Lego fan!

I have an 8 year old boy, therefore I have a plethora of Legos in my house. While he used to build and then never touch again, recently he has become more adventurous and wants to build the set then take it apart and see what else he can do.

We have the Lego Idea Book and a few other hardback, beautiful Lego books around the house that have been well loved and well used. This new LEGO Awesome Ideas book is full of EVEN MORE fantastic ideas. It is split into five categories: Outer Space, Modern Metropolis, The Wild West, Fantasy Land and The Real World. You can even learn how to build a LEGO world from scratch using the themed worlds section.

A great gift for any Lego enthusiast, it is packed with projects, although there is a need to have a well rounded Lego collection in order to make many of the items. Not a problem for us, but might be for someone just starting on their Lego journey. The photos are lovely, the sections well put together and the instructions are easy to understand, at least they are for my son.

A great buy.

This was purchased as a Christmas gift for my 7-year-old. He has buckets of Legos, like many kids his age, and we wanted to breathe fresh life into them for him.

This book has hundreds of pages of ideas. While it doesn't have the same detailed instructions that come with a Lego kit, it shows enough detail that they can be built by anyone who has the correct pieces in their collection. The pages are full-color and have little bits of the signature Lego humor throughout. My son has spent hours poring over it, planning which thing he is going to make next.

The book itself is a heavy-duty hardcover binding. The outside of the front cover is fun; it's made so that the images appear to be moving when you move the cover back and forth. The paper of the book is high-quality, and the binding is solid. This book will stand up to being manhandled by kids, which is important considering the target audience.

Overall, if you have a Lego fanatic in your household (like I do), I can wholeheartedly recommend this book. It has really gotten my son's wheels turning.

I am an AFOL (Adult Fan of Lego) and while I started buying sets for my daughter (Lego Friends mostly), I have been collecting sets for a few years now for myself. While I like to keep most of my sets intact to rebuild, I find that this book has introduced me into thinking about building in a different way. Some of the negative reviewers state that there are many "special" bricks that won't be in the average collection. That is true...but I would never have thought to buy Mixels or Technic sets before. This is my favourite of the Idea books and while I won't rush to source all the elements I don't have, I am enjoying trying out some of the ideas in the book.
I waited until it was on sale before I bought it, but to me it was worth it. The photos are fantastic and detailed, and there are showstopper builds at the end of each chapter which really showcases what can be done with a simple brick and unlimited imagination.
A great addition to a Lego Library.

Useful book but with mistakes....

A great idea, a huge amount of vocabulary broken down by category and even better a very complete set of mp3's so you can hear the correct pronunciation. I would also love this book in a Kindle edition, it would be so much more convenient and portable, but one is not available.
I happened to start with Chapter 19 - Time and Space and already came across a mistake on p. 405. Under the first box of INFO the time Il est... 9h 45 is written as neuf heures moins le quart and translated as quarter to ten. This should be dix heures moins le quart. Same with the next entry of 9h 55 (neuf heures moins cinq) This should be dix heures moins cinq.
I wonder how many other errors there are that as a beginning learner of French I won't recognize and take as correct ....

Pronounce it right.

This book comes with a CD with the proper French pronunciation. Since French has so many unaccented syllables it's really necessary to hear the proper pronunciation from a native French speaker, which this CD sounds like. A great aid to learn French.

An excellent and comprehensive resource

An excellent resource. Vocabulary is categorised and very comprehensive. After studying basic/intermediate French this will add significantly to your vocabulary. There are contextual examples provided for most words and studying these will be an added bonus to supplement previous basic grammar learning. Some of the expressions are idiomatic which are very useful. In reality, there are many words and expressions that will never be relevant to someone not living in a French-speaking country, but the categorised layout allows you to "cherry-pick" the areas of interest (e.g. you could give business a miss but focus on foods, travel, accommodation etc. - whatever your interests and likely requirements.

Missed Opportunity

I was excited when I saw the title for this book. Anyone who has done Active Directory administration, especially in big environments, knows the benefits that can come from being able to work with automated processes. Windows PowerShell is a perfect companion for AD, which is why the AD cmdlets were some of the first to be developed. The ability to take complicated AD management processes and simplify them down to custom commands or restrict administration to just the tasks needed is very powerful.

I should have seen it coming from the comment in the Introduction from the author that he was not trying to teach everything about AD or PowerShell. Unfortunately, this book really does neither subject well. I reads more like a manual for AD PowerShell cmdlets than a topic level book. At one point, the author lists 7 pages of parameters for a command. Certainly, that is the kind of thing is better referenced in a help file than listed verbatim in the book (especially since the list was probably outdated by the time the book shipped). In some cases, I think the help file for those cmdlets is actually more useful because of the number of examples provided.

The book is divided into chapters based on AD technologies (promoting DCs, managing DNS, managing users, etc.), but only goes into the barest detail on how to do that, with minimal discussion on why you would want to do it or how PowerShell changes the game for long time AD admins. One of the previous reviewers mentioned not reading the book on a computer because you may be tempted to just copy and paste the PowerShell samples -- my opinion is that IS exactly what the book was designed for. The author even includes parameters in some examples that aren't necessary or don't work in the example context while pointing out that you can include them because "it won't hurt" and they may be valid in some cases. I personally don't think that AD PowerShell commands are the kind of thing that I want admins to run who don't understand how the command works or what the different options are doing.

The scripts in the book are very basic and mostly just wrappers around oneliners. The best scripts that the author includes are actually from Ashley McGlone, a Premier Field Service Engineer at Microsoft who did an awesome series on PowerShell and AD at Microsoft Virtual Academy. THERE is a good series if you want to learn how PowerShell can be used to manage Active Directory.

There was only one chapter on AD Cloud management, and that revolved mostly around getting connected to Azure to deploy a virtual machine with AD on it. There was no discussion of managing Azure AD or how a hybrid on-premise-Cloud AD solutions would work or what advantages or disadvantages there were. Azure AD is not the same thing as on premise AD. Any organization that is running Office 365 already has an Azure AD and that management becomes even more important in those cases.

I wish this book had been more about how PowerShell can help with some of the issues that have been traditionally difficult for Active Directory management with the GUIs or providing automation solutions that make reporting or troubleshooting easier. Instead, it was a book for copy and paste admins -- a dangerous subject for that type of administration.

I wanted to like this book because I think this is a topic that could be really powerful, but I would hesitate to recommend this book either because it wouldn't expend sufficiently on what is already available in the help files or it would provide just enough information to the dangerous.

A thorough tour of most of the tasks of AD admin using Powershell.

Everything in the Microsoft flavored sysadmin world is going Powershell, so if you're still a click-Next admin you're not being as productive as you could be (paraphrased from Jeffery Snover).

The title of this book was right up my alley: I am on the AD admin team of a large enterprise, and I use Powershell for many of my daily tasks. Although I've been using posh for nearly 2 years I still have a lot of room to improve. I try to read Powershell books on the weekends so I was glad when this title arrived. But I must admit to being a little disappointed once I started reading. This is not a book to "take you to the next level" but it is a thorough tour of most of the tasks of AD admin using Powershell.

I can see two audiences for this book: 1. Admins new to Powershell who want to follow along with a very knowledgeable instructor as they demonstrate the steps needed to build an AD infrastructure from the ground up. This is exactly what this book accomplishes; in fact I believe it was written step by step as the author built a home lab using almost nothing but Powershell. The problem for this green audience is that many things are assumed - for example there are a few custom cmdlets that appear with sparse explanation. 2. The other audience is made up of sysadmins who are more experienced but may not work in AD with Powershell often enough to internalize all of the commands and syntax and need a reference full of examples. I can see many admins copy-pasting from this book into the Powershell IDE - and there's nothing wrong with that, as long as it's a learning experience.

As for me, I am more in the second audience and will keep this book on hand as a reference. But for my fellow admins looking for an introduction to AD administration with Powershell, this will leave some knowledge gaps that you will have to fill elsewhere. Maybe that isn't such a bad thing, as it should cause you to want to learn even more.

Book to follow by "try yourself examples"

I am a system administrator working with mainly Microsoft Products, and as such I keep an eye out for most IT blogs out there. When I say that a new book was released by Charlie Russel I immediately took the opportunity to review it.

Needless to say he has been 12 years MVP at Microsoft and wrote a lot of books I used to start on my career to become a System Administrator.
Target audience:
Who is this book for? Should I buy this book?
I will be straight here, this book absolutely requires you to have Medium Knowledge of AD (Active Directory) and Beginner knowledge of Powershell. (More on this in Book content)
This book is absolutely perfect if you started using PowerShell or plan to start using it and want to delve deep into managing AD using the command line.
Book Content
This whole book is a “do yourself” example. You should be aware that the book has no information regarding how to set up your environment and goes on the premises that you have the know-how to set your own virtual test laboratory and get working on the examples from the book.
Even when you get an information on the test laboratory it is never in-depth, so take that into account.
Like I said this book requires Medium knowledge in the field of AD (Active Directory), this is because the book is structured on a basic schema:

1. Task to do
2. Short Explanation of “Task” Role
3. Example doing the task using GUI (optional)
4. Example of doing the task using Powershell
5. Example of Powershell in a more “friendly” manner (basically same Powershell command/script written in a more readable way)
Thus it will never go into deep dives regarding AD or Powersheel, but instead it will give you a short information about it and what it goes on a global level and then gives you an example to follow.
Conclusion
The book is 257 pages long (short read), and it’s definitely a book to go throw by “trial by fire”; meaning that it’s best to get it on paperback or on your kindle/tablet and not on your PC, so you will not be tempted to just copy-paste the commands/scripts.
This is best because you want to have your Lab set-up and actually do and write all the Powershell commands and script there yourself. If you’re new to Powershell this will help you a lot, since it’s so unforgiving on the syntax used, you will get a lot of errors but throw that practice you will get the hang of it and become better proficient in it.
Thus I would recommend this book to anyone that is currently working with AD and wants to explore Powershell and leave the GUI behind.
I would have liked if the authors of books like this would actually include a tutorial on how to set-up your test environment, this would help a lot more people to go into books like this and try them.
